Effective May 11, our organization has changed its name to the Go For Broke National Education Center. Why did we change our name? Over the past 17 years of existence, we have grown from the World War II veterans building the Go For Broke Monument to establishing a successful nationwide education program. Now, we are entering a new and exciting phase of our journey, as we set forth to achieve one more dream of the WWII veterans. That dream is to build a permanent home to house the collection of Hanashi oral histories, to have a permanent exhibit on the Nisei veterans, and to have a place where visitors of the Go For Broke Monument can further explore what it means to be an American.
As we begin this journey, we know that it will take the help and support of not only the Nisei WWII veterans, but of the community and especially the succeeding generations of veteran family members or friends – the Sansei, Yonsei and even Gosei. As a Yonsei myself, I understand that it was my grandparents' generation whose sacrifices enabled a better life for me and my generation. And I hope that you all will come out to a special event, "A Taste of Roy's," to learn more about what Go For Broke National Education Center does, and how you too can help support our efforts.
"A Taste of Roy's" will feature Roy Yamaguchi himself, a special cocktail reception, and Roy's sumptuous "pupus" or appetizers on Tuesday, July 25 at Roy's Restaurant (Downtown Los Angeles). So don't miss out on this fun and "ono" delicious event. (See ad on this page for more details.)
I hope to meet all of you in person on July 25!
Sincerely,
Christine Sato-Yamazaki
Executive Director & President

On June 5, 1942, while the U.S. Pacific Fleet was busy on Midway Island defeating the Japanese Navy at Hawaii's front door, Japanese Americans were quickly being shuttled out its back. Niseis from the Hawaii National Guard were ordered onto a ship whose final destination only high-ranking officials knew. Willie Goo was exempted because his name was Goo and not Goto. His mother was Japanese and as he watched friends prepare to leave, he asked if he should join them. "It's up to you," the commanding officer said.
"I told him I gotta go," said Goo in a Hanashi Oral History Program interview. "So when the boat went, last minute, I decided right away. I went. I just went." That's how Goo came to be one of 1,432 men who eventually made up the segregated 100th Infantry Battalion.

Go For Broke Changes Its Name, Announces Future Goals
On May 11, 2006, the Go For Broke Educational Foundation (100th/442nd/MIS WWII Memorial Foundation) publicly announced it legally changed its name to the Go For Broke National Education Center. At a press conference held at the Go For Broke Monument that day, Executive Director and President Christine Sato-Yamazaki excitedly announced the reasons for the change: to focus on its future goal to create a public facility that will educate generations to come of the significance of the Japanese American World War II veteran story. "Though the name has changed, the original intent established by the veterans will continue and the commitment by this generation to ensure the veteran legacy is preserved and taught is clearer today," said Sato-Yamazaki.
